As Mongolian Government is steering the discussion about the proposed dams in Lake Baikal – Selenge River basin from energy security to national water crisis it is important for civil society groups and independent researchers to collect and use for good available information on effective water management solutions and efficient water use technologies relevant to Mongolia.

Notices on cancellation of bids for feasibility studies and environmental assessments on two Baikal -Selenge basin dams were posted on MINIS Project web-site.  This finally signifies that practically ALL  rightful demands consistently voiced by the RwB have been finally honored:
–Consultations in Russia and Mongolia held at 35 locations and have shown that local people have wide spectrum of grave concerns related to proposed projects;
– Studies for individual dams immediately leading to formation of documents sufficient for investment and construction of dams have been cancelled;

Besides Shuren and Orkhon dam sub-projects, the World Bank MINIS Project oversees formation and development of three groundwater basin administrations in the vast Gobi regions of Mongolia. As everywhere else in Mongolia  Gobi water basin councils are established to provide guidance and control basin administrations. Naturally the RwB Coalition and its member OT Watch NGO applied for participation in such councils and Ms.D.Sukhgerel became a member of the Galba-Uush Doloodyn Gobi underground water basin Council.

The WB MINIS Project reports that Meeting of Sub-working Group took place in Irkutsk
Under the Mining infrastructure Investment Support Project (MINIS), Terms of Reference (ToR) of  Regional Environmental Assessment ( REA) for the Flow Regulation of Orkhon River and Construction of Reservoir Complex (OGP ) and Shuren Hydropower Plant Projects ( SHPP) is being developed, and covers Selenge River Basin and Lake Baikal.
